Lake Bunyonyi is located in southwestern Uganda, just a few kilometers from Kabale town and is the only lake shared by Kabale and Rubanda Districts.

Formed by volcanic activity, Lake Bunyonyi is a lava dammed lake resulting from the emergence of lava flows that blocked the outlet of the Ndego River in Muko Subcounty.

It holds the distinction of being the deepest lake in Uganda and the second deepest in East Africa after Lake Tanganyika, with a depth estimated at 900 meters. However, ongoing soil erosion and farming practices along the lake’s shores have gradually reduced its depth over time.
